Perfect weather conditions this morning for runners aiming to compete the 13.1 miles of the half-marathon in aid of the fight against cancer. Cool temperature , overcast clouds and a light breeze was all she wrote.
New start and finish line at Public Beach with runners heading through the car-park and turning right on to West Bay Road and heading towards George Town. Construction work on the new tunnel had a small diversion around it and back on to West Bay Road. Passing the Eastern Avenue traffic lights and on to North Church Street, runners headed continued through town, passing the docks and on to South Church Street towards South Sound. The turnaround was opposite the entrance to The Lakes then back the way we came.
The competition at the front was between Esmond Brown and Gregley Gayle with Gregley ahead by the half-way point by 22 seconds. On the way back Esmond closed the gap and somewhere along the way both runners found the pace was set to the finish line. At the end they had exactly the same time and was given equal first place 1:31.30. Jason Trautman was the third runner to cross the finish line in 1:34.06 but no time shown at the halfway stage so no splits calculated by the system.
In the ladies race it was Olivia Shanks leading the way in 1:34.47 with Michelle Vinton giving her a good run out coming second in 1:35.56 - both very creditable times and just over 3 minutes behind the leading men. Kym Bailey was a good third place in 1:38.49.
Well done to everyone who took part and a big thanks thanks to all the sponsors who help the Cayman Islands Cancer Society with the costs of putting on this event.
