Halloween 10-10-10 and 30k 2018

Two new champions in the 30k solo run with Abraham Whittaker and Oddy Grullon ruling the roost at this morning's long run around the Loop from Morritts, Queen's Highway, Frank Sound Road, Sea View Road, Gun Bay and back from where you started.

Abraham had only decided last minute to run the entire 30k after he was allowed to "be a little late" for work, his boss had kindly allowed him. Leading from start to finish, Abraham ran with 345AC team-mate and training partner Levi Superville (who was running just the first leg). Abraham was also running a leg for a team and put so much into Leg 1, his form started to fade as the race wore on and he must have been wondering if his legs could carry him as he go slower and slower as the miles and the heat was wearing him down. But hang on he did and in the end had a very decent time of 2 hours 16 minutes and 46 seconds. Meanwhile, Sean Lilley (who had last month completed the Chicago Marathon in a sub 3 hour time) was trying to pace himself better and his first two 10k splits were very even. Unfortunately, Sean had not noticed that we put out water at the changeover locations and missed important rehydration moments which affected his final 10k. In fairness though on a course like the 30k with each mile getting hotter and hotter, it is rare we see negative splits, and that said, completing the course in 2 hours 23 minutes and change isn't too shabby and a nice second place trophy is something he can keep for his efforts. A good run from Enrico Carmassi gave him a well earned third place trophy. Javier Perez first 30k run was good for fourth spot with Yazzer Abdulah fifth.

In the ladies race Oddy also had everything her own way as she, like Abraham, led the race from start to finish and won in a time of 2 hours 44 minutes and 29 seconds. Never a million miles away though was Jalene Cruz who was running with Yazzer for a while but eventually pulled away in the last few miles and comfortably second female, whilst Sarah Gavin earn third place just managing to stay under 3 hours. Fourth spot was Maria van Hamersveld who probably had the most consistent pacing today with only a couple of minutes between each 10k split.

Leg 1 saw Levi Superville of 345AC The Bushmen and Abraham Whittaker go straight to the front and quickly pull away from the rest of the field, but as Abraham had the full 30k to complete, it was wise to let Levi pull away towards the end of the first 10k. Levi was first through and handed over the baton to Victor Magalhaes in a time of 38:42. Abraham was the first 30k runner in the history of this race to cross the first mat in under 40 minutes which was good for his team, but he probably regretted that later. Bill Edwards took the baton but as he is more familiar on the cycling circuit there was little chance of him running down Victor. James McMahon (McLoz) had a decent run finishing next and handing over to Lauren Hogan who would go on to complete legs 2 and 3. but only just ahead of Marlie Du Toit (last year's defending 30k champion) of the Fartlekkers was fastest female of the day breaking the Leg 1 record (formally held by Tiffany Cole) in a time of 44:58. Kiara Mclaughlin of the MDR Gurls was next quickest female and handed over to Tiffany Cole.

On Leg 2 Victor extended the lead of the Bushmen with the quickest time on this leg, but only 2 seconds quicker than Jason Trautman who Fartlekked his way down Frank Sound Road bringing this team into contention. Meanwhile Bill Edwards had hung on to keep BAM in third place by the 20k mark. Bill's son Will Edwards ran the third fastest time of the day moving 345AC JAW up the field. In the ladies race it was Tiffany Cole who was quickest lady moving the MDR Gurls well ahead in the All-Female team division. Lauren of McLoz was next fastest lady which is impressive when she ran through to complete leg 3.

Leg 3 saw Juan Pablo Valerio run the quickest time and the first runner ever to break 40 minutes on Leg 3 and improves the record he set last year by 25 seconds. This run ensured the Bushmen were clear winners and only the second team to break 2 hours for the 30k relay [the record of 1:57.11 from 2016 held by Dominic Dyer, Victor Magalhaes and Will Edwards]. Next placed team was the Fartlekkers with Marnus Ehlers also running a quick time and leaving them unchallenged. Third fastest leg was also third place team BAM ran by Marlon Crowe.

Fastest lady was Michelle Vinton of Harmonic 1 of 45:10:77 broke Beth Florek's leg 3 record from 2014 and ensured her team easily won the Corporate division. Ava Hider was next quickest female and when she crossed the line her team the MDR Gurls had not only won the All-Female team race but broken the record for this division. Also impressive was Lauren  (McLoz) who ran Leg 2 in 46:34 then Leg 3 in 48:08 showing she is in great form ahead of the Cayman Half-Marathon so take note Olivia!

A big shout out to the Movers for Life runners who, under the guidance of Winston Sobers have shown what determination and dedication to improving your health and fitness can do. It was not that long ago that some of these "Movers" could barely run a 5k but now, they had 6 relay teams which is great in itself, but also some of these guys and gals completed the entire 30k. Winston and team at the Movers, you are doing an incredible job motivating and improving these people and probably changing their lives forever.

Thank you to sponsors KRyS Global who provide the financial support to cover the cost of putting this event on, Thank you also to all those wonderful people who came out to volunteer on water stops and to the Cayman Islands Cadet Corp who provided back-up and safety marshals.
