The first Aquathlon took part on the Governor's Beach this afternoon with 24 individuals and 27 teams taking the 800 meters swim and 3000 meters run challenge set by CIASA and 345AC in this joint venture designed to test the skills of Cayman's swimmers and track stars whilst raising a few bucks for our young athletes.
The race started around 3.45pm with swimmers starting between the bouys and headed towards West Bay for 400 meters, around another bouy and back to Governor's Beach. Not surprisingly it was the team relay swimmers who were out of the water first with John Bodden (Bird Gang) and Liam Henry (Young Distance) heading in to transition together handing their timing chips over to Will Edwards and Joshua Steen respectively in around 10mins 20 seconds. Close behind were Jake Bailey (INZ) and Zach Moore (Zach & Sandy) just 18 seconds away and handing over to runners Tommy Kehoe and Sandy Hew respectively. There were many very quick swimmers including Avery Lambert (11:06.2), Stephanie Royston (11:28.3), Krishna Adapa (11:32.1), Kyra Rabess (11:33.9), Stefano Bonati (11:34.4), Sam Bailey (11:35.7) and Corey Westerborg with a bunch of others not far behind, which all seemed super impressive to me; I swim like a brick!
The quickest Solo competitor out of the water was Jasmine Lambert-Wrag in 12 mins and 14 seconds whilst next quickest was Patrick Harfield in 12 mins 56 secs. Others under 10 minutes for the swim included Tim Dawson, Jon Roney, Kim Eckart and Jan Paderan who were holding some energy back for the pending run. Jon Roney was the most impressive in transition efficiency taking a mere 11 seconds to put on his trainers and exit over the mat, whilst Jasmine lost a lot of time as it took her almost 2 minutes to leave transition, by which time most runners will be 400-500 meters up the road.
The swimmers leaving the final result up to the runners who headed on to West Bay Road, turned into Public Beach Car park, a turn around and water stop at Calico Jacks and back out to the main road. Down the Esterley Tibbitts by-pass before finally turning at CostuLess and back to the Governor's Beach through the finish-line.
The race was won easily in the end by Will Edwards (Bird Gang) who did not seem to raise a sweat finishing his 3k run in a canter with 10:45.7 and an overall team time of 21:17.8. The quickest run of the day and the only person to break 10 minutes was Victor Magalhaes who romped home in a time of 9:58.0 and moved his team 'Los Dos' from 7th place after the swim to 2nd overall position as their combined finish time was 21:39.0. Another very good runner Levi Superville brought his team 'Flying Fish' from 11th place after the swim to 3rd overall position after his super run in 10:12.2.
The first all female team was 'Slow Down for What' with swimmer Kyra Rabess handing over to one of Cayman's best female distance runners Ava Hider who not surprisingly ran the quickest female 3k of the day, with Molly Kehoe second quickest female runner.
Patrick Harfield was probabably a little tired after his St Patrick's Day 5k on Friday but showed no sign of fatigue as he easily romped home a good 3 and 1/2 minutes ahead of the nearest rivals, although in fairness to the rest of the competitors, Patrick is a very impressive all-rounder and wins many events he competes in. Well done Jon Roney who hung on for second place and Kendall Ebanks who impressed with his 3rd place.
Jasmine may have lost a bit of time in transition but not concerned as she remained composed to easily take top female spot, whilst Ciara Nash impressed with a second spot with Teagan Nash not far behind in third.
Thanks to the CIASA and to 345AC teams who worked hard in the back-ground to plan and manage this event, which was well organised and enjoyed by those who participated. Thanks as always to the many volunteers both in the water and on the roads as safety marshals, and of course a huge thank you to 'Sealand Adventure Tours' who sponsored the costs of this event making it all possible and both the CIASA and 345AC very much appreciate this support. 345AC hope to see many of you again at the Tropical Relay next weekend, which is 5 x 1 mile challenge.
